It cost a little, but I bought my wife a Canon S2 IS digital camera. It's great for all kinds of shots, has a good zoom, and my wife loves to use it. She hates cameras, or did until now. It was easy to use.

I have a Canon a-590. Nice little camera. Here is what I like about it.
Uses AA batteries buy a charger and rechargeable batteries.
You won't get stuck with a camera that needs a charge
Has a good range of manual controls, after you get proficient you can get creative.
Takes good quality pictures in auto mode.
One of the few compacts that you can but different lenses on. Wide angle, macro for close ups.
Has a decent instruction manual that comes with it.
Cost was $160 plus $12 for a 1GB memory card which will hold several hundred pictures.
I wouldn't spend a lot on a new hobby,so this is a good camera in my opinion.

If you want something really easy for snapshots, the Kodak cameras are really great.
If you want to learn how to use all the special features, probably a canon would be better because kodak cameras don't usually have as many of those. Also, there are panasonic cameras that are really nice. I have one that does most of the things that the SLR cameras will do... It even has a 12X optical zoom, but it's pretty small (for a camera with that type of zoom.) I love it. It was around $400, but that was about 2 years ago so I'm sure they are cheaper now.
